Freshwater Salinization Impacts the Interspecific Competition between Microcystis and Scenedesmus

Freshwater salinization is a growing environmental issue caused by various anthropic or natural factors that lead to changes in water chemistry and physical conditions, affecting the survival diversity of phytoplankton. In this study, we tested physiological, morphological interspecific competition freshwater cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa green algae Scenedesmus obliquus salinity stress. Results demonstrated increasing had significant negative effect on growth M. S. obliquus. showed decline rate with salinity, while lower under stress but no difference between two groups. cocultures, outcompeted aeruginosa, displacement was accelerated salinity. The photosynthetic performance both affected presence competitors, cultivation time. variations competitor. study suggests can have impact species. findings our suggest interactions among phytoplankton, which play crucial role functioning ecosystems.
